Film Production Process

Once complete, the sales agent will begin to sell the film’s distribution rights within unsold territories to distribution companies around the world.

Distribution companies are key to getting the film out to an audience as they have the infrastructure and knowledge to maximise the penetration of the film in their territory.  A distributor will spend a certain amount of money on marketing the film in its territory based on their agreement with the producer or sales agent.  This is known as the Print & Advertising (P&A) costs.

The ultimate goal is to have the film screened to audiences in theatres worldwide; however, the format in which the audience is reached has evolved over the last decade and distribution companies have systematically evolved alongside with it.  This evolution, along with various new technologies, helps a film generate revenue through multiple forms of distribution either simultaneously or consecutively to the film’s theatrical release.

A selection of the various distribution formats are outlined in more detail below:

The theatrical release gives the film its initial and crucial exposure to the audience and also helps lead to profits further down the line.  Recently, the period of time the movie is shown in theatres, the theatrical ‘window’, has been purposely shortened in order to capitalise on the momentum generated by theatrical release and in turn exploit the physical sell through market.

Home entertainment

This includes DVD and Blu-Ray sales and rentals, as well as online streaming and digital downloads.  Home entertainment is the most diverse distribution format and allows distributors to explore new avenues in order to maintain consistent and healthy growth prospects.

Following theatrical release, Pay TV will initially buy the rights to a film, which will stipulate how many times a film can be screened and over what period of time. Free TV broadcasters will then mirror this agreement by purchasing rights after the pay TV broadcasters.

The number of TV services available to consumers has broadened with Pay-Per-View and On-Demand, which allows viewers to choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch it – rather than having to abide by the traditional TV viewing method.

Ancillary Rights

Apart from the above, there are many other revenue streams that exist that can have a highly positive impact on the film’s gross revenue.  Ancillary rights can be broadly defined but always includes items such as merchandising rights and rights sold to airlines to screen films in-flight.
